Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program

Program Director: Yvette LaCoursiere, MD

Resident Training in Family Planning at UCSD

Resident training in family planning is emphasized at UCSD. As part of the Ryan Residency Training Program, and second year residents participate in family planning as part of their clinic and GYN rotations respectively. Residents learn not only the fundamental principles of family planning, but also will be exposed to the most current family planning literature. During these rotations, residents learn how to do office D&Cs. Additionally, the residents participate in the D&Es done in the OR. UCSD has a long tradition of having residents rotate at Planned Parenthood. This partnership allows the residents to benefit from the D&C and D&E volume at Planned Parenthood. A brand new addition to the family planning residency training is a weekly Comprehensive Contraception Clinic. This clinic will allow residents to utilize the CDC’s United States Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use (USMEC) to counsel women with complex medical conditions who need guidance choosing a contraceptive method. Residents will also be trained in hysteroscopic and laparoscopic sterilization techniques. In addition to the family planning rotation, there are quarterly family planning lectures on very current topics such as the new Emergency Contraception options. There is also an extensive contraceptive review before the CREOG exam.
