Diabetes and Pregnancy: Diabetic women routinely become pregnant. Also, pregnancy itself may induce diabetes in some women. Because diabetes often causes problems for the fetus during pregnancy, pre-pregnancy counseling is important for diabetic women and careful monitoring during pregnancy is essential. Gynecology: Routine gynecologic care is essential for good health of women of all ages. Dr. Homer Chin directs Gynecologic Services (619 - 543 - 6777).

Gynecologic Oncology: Cancer may occur in all portions of the female reproductive tract. Effective treatment is enhance by early detection. Dr. Steven Plaxe coordinates a comprehensive program for the diagnosis and treatment gynecologic cancer. Telephone 619 - 543 - 6905 for more information.

High Risk Pregnancy: A special program is available for patients who are at risk of having or have already been diagnosed as having problems with their pregnancy. Patients who are at high risk include those who have had problems during a previous pregnancy or who have special medical conditions which may be associated with complicated pregnancies. Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery: Female urinary incontinence is a major clinical problem and a significant cause of disability and dependency. Urinary incontinence affects all age groups and is particularly common in the elderly. At least 10 million adult Americans suffer from this potentially embarrassing problem, but only half have consulted a physician. The good news is that there are only a few causes of urinary incontinence and most can be effectively treated once properly diagnosed. Dr. Charles Nager is the director of the Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery Division at UCSD. Dr. Nager is also co-director of the UCSD Women's Pelvic Medicine Center. Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility: A variety of endocrine disorders occur in women which can lead to amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) and/or infertility. With proper diagnosis, most of these conditions can be effectively treated. R. Jeffrey Chang (858 - 534 - 8930) heads the Program for Reproductive Endocrine Disorders and Infertility.

Menopause: Menopause is associated with major changes in hormone concentrations within the body and these can cause significant changes in the way a person feels. Nurse Midwifery: Certified Nurse Midwife care: UCSD CNM's Provide Parental Care, Gynecologic care, and Well-Woman care including annual PAP smears and breast exams as well as advise on reproductive health.  Delivery by a CNM is available at the UCSD Medical center in Hillcrest. Obstetrics (Pregnancy) - Prenatal Care: Care by a doctor with expertise in management of pregnant women is very important because obstetric care significantly reduces the number of problems which occur during pregnancy and also significantly enhances the health of newborn babies. Pregnancy and Substance Use: UCSD Options for Recovery is responsible for locating and supporting substance using pregnant women to seek and obtain health care services, enter and complete treatment for addiction. It reports a high rate of enrollment for the target population (pregnant women) and infants born into the project are drug free more than 90% of the time. Options follow our families for two years and assist their access to pediatric health care with particular focus on prevention. Contact: Kathie Morgan 294-6306.

Reproductive Genetics and Prenatal Diagnosis: A wide variety of genetic diseases can be inherited by newborn babies from their parents. Dr. Angela Scioscia coordinates a comprehensive program for counseling patients prior to pregnancy. Dr. Scioscia also is director of the Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center, which diagnoses and manages genetics diseases and other problems which can occur during pregnancies. Women's Speciality Clinic:The UCSD Psychiatric Associates, under the direction of Leslie Tam, MD, and Mary Neal, PhD, offer several Special Services including consultation, medication management, individual and couples therapy, and support groups to help women deal with post partum depression and anxiety, pregnancy and parenting issues, menopausal depression and anxiety, infertility, eating disorders, or PMS.
